Dubuque café expands hours, menu

A recently opened cafe is coming into full bloom on Dubuque’s West End with the recent expansion of its menu and hours.

Roses & Berries Cafe opened this spring at 4340 Asbury Road and became an instant hit with customers flocking to the store each morning to order from the French- and Middle Eastern-inspired menu.

First bite: New Dubuque pizza restaurant to hold soft opening A popular Dubuque taproom will launch its newest venture in a soft opening beginning next week.

Driftless Pizza Co., which is owned and operated by the owners of Backpocket Dubuque, will host a soft opening for two weeks beginning Monday, June 24. During the soft-opening period, diners must make advance reservations on a portal that opens this morning. “We expect those tables to go very quickly,” said Jacob Simmons, owner of Backpocket. “We’re excited to be adding something new to the Millwork District from what we can offer within our company.”

The pizzeria fills a space in the Novelty Iron Works Building that formerly housed pizza restaurant Gino’s East, which closed last year.

There are many ways to describe the operational approach Dan and Megan Engstrom took when they assumed the ownership and operation of a family legacy four years ago.

“We don’t plan on making huge changes in the way we operate,” said Dan, who co-owns The Ritz restaurant in downtown Dyersville with his wife, Megan. “People appreciated that we came in and took over what was already here. I think so many times people buy a restaurant or ownership changes hands and (the buyers) think, ‘We have to make this our thing now,’ and they change everything up.”

Megan said the couple heard that message from regulars of the restaurant.

Outdoor dining event to benefit Jo Daviess community foundation

An outdoor dining experience will raise money to support a local community foundation.

Community Foundation of Jo Daviess County will hold a Farm Table Dinner Experience event from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at Orchard Landing Apple Farm, 6635 W. Beaty Hollow Road, Hanover.

The event features a menu of local and sustainable foods, local beer and wine and live music.
